Chapter 11: Svâyambuva Manu Advises Dhruva Mahârâja to Stop Fighting
(1) Maitreya said: 'After having heard the words of the sages, touched Dhruva water and fixed he on his bow an arrow made by Nârâyana. (2) As he joined this weapon of Nârâyana to his bow, quickly the illusions created by the Yakshas were vanquished, o Vidura, just like pleasures and pains are upon the rise of knowledge. (3) With the weapon given fixed on his bow, there sprang out golden arrows with feathers like the wings of swans that, with the tumultuous sound of peacocks entering a forest, entered the enemy soldiers. (4) From those sharp pointed arrows were the Yakshas, here and there on the battlefield, terribly agitated and rushed they towards him in anger, with uplifted weapons, like serpents with raised hoods against Garuda. (5) By his arrows he cut through the arms, legs, necks and bellies of all the Yakshas coming forward in battle and sent them to the abode above the sun to which at all times the ones who send their seed upwards [the celibates] go. (6) Seeing those Yakshas by the one of the finest chariot being killed, while they factually were without offense, approached the grandfather, the Manu, together with the great sages, from his mercy the son of Uttânapâda to instruct him. (7) Manu said: 'Enough my son, with an escalation of anger you're on the path of ignorance and sin, the way you're killing these Yakshas who never wronged you. (8) O dear, this undertaking to kill the Yakshas who didn't sin, is not befitting our family and is in truth forbidden. (9) Surely my best, you are aggrieved by the death of the brother you care about, but now the offense of one Yaksha has lead to the killing of the many of his associates. (10) This killing of living beings, is certainly never the way of those who are honest in following on the path of the Lord of the Senses; taking the body for the self one is like the animals. (11) With meditation on the Supersoul within all living beings, you have reached the abode of Lord Hari, who is so difficult to propitiate and have you attained the supreme position of Vishnu. (12) Being such a person, by Him always in remembrance of what is His and also being held in regard by the devoted ones, how then could you, vowed to the saintly an example, undertake such an abominable thing?
(13) Being of universal tolerance, friendship and mercy towards all living beings, one is also balanced and with that is the Soul of All, the Supreme Lord very pleased. (14) Pleasing the Supreme Lord is a person liberated from the modes of material nature and freed from the worries of his individual existence; he achieves the spiritual bliss of the Unlimited [brahma nirvânam]. (15) From the five elements of matter man and woman evolved and of their sexual life there came about even more men and women in this world. (16) Thus, o King, does, by the illusory energy of the Supreme Self, the creation, maintenance and annihilation and the interaction of the modes take place. (17) Like iron moved by a magnet then, must this manifested world be considered as moved by the remote cause of the unmanifest, uncontaminated, Original Person of Wisdom.(18) Divided by the force of Time, that is the Supreme Lord who, even though His potency acts upon the three modes, is the non-doer who is never the killer although He kills, takes no doubt however, this all place because of the inconceivable power of the Almighty. (19) He the infinite Time puts everything to an end; without a beginning He is the beginning of everything; without decreasing He causes the living to be born and the finite to be killed by death. (20) No one is really His ally or His definite enemy; of the Supreme in the form of Time, entering equally the living beings, are of His moving the ones of karma and the other material elements following behind, like particles of dust moved by the wind. (21) Free from a short or long lifespan as is the case with the beings of birth, is the Almighty ever situated in His own transcendendental position and awards He the living beings subject to the laws of karma. (22) Some explain that karma [or being divided in fruitive action] as arising from one's particular nature or as brought about by others, o protector of men; some say it's due to Time, others refer to fate, while still others ascribe it to the desire of the living entity. (23) Dearest one, for sure therefore no one can ever know the grand design of the Original Cause, the Unmanifested of the Transcendence of Him who gives rise to the various energies.
(24) Never, my son, are also all these who are followers of Kuvera [the divine treasurer] the killers of your brother; the cause of birth and death of a living entity, my dear, unfailing lies with God. (25) He creates the universe and for sure maintains and annihilates it also; moreover no doubt He from being without ego, does not get entangled by the activities of the modes of nature. (26) This Supersoul, controller and maintainer of all beings, making use of the force of His own external energy, brings forth, devours and fosters. (27) Unto Him, so sure the Supreme of death and immortality, my dearest, that is in all respects the ultimate goal of surrender of the world, do all the devoted ones bear offerings, without fail being controlled therein like bulls by a rope through their nose. (28) Five years of age only you left your mother aggrieved at heart by the words of your stepmother and went to the forest to worship the Lord by austerities and thus you achieved a topmost position over the three worlds. (29) With that of Him in mind, my best, turn yourself, free from anger, to the one infallible spiritual self [the Brahman] situated in the transcendental and try to discover the uncontaminated from which all of this dividedness appears to be untrue. (30) By at that time rendering service to the Supersoul of the Supreme Lord, who, having all potencies, is the unlimited reservoir of all pleasure, you will very soon untie the knot of illusion of 'I' and 'mine' and thus be firmly fixed.
(31) Just control your anger - it is the enemy of all goodness - and all good fortune will be yours; the constant hearing of this, my dear King, will act as a medicinal treatment on a disease. (32) Never should a learned person who desires the soul its freedom from fear, be under the control of anger, for everyone fears the person overwhelmed by it. (33) You've been in offense towards the brother of S'iva, Kuvera, angrily killing the Yakshas who you thought killed your brother. (34) Forthwith pacify him, my son, offering him your obeisances respectfully with gentle words, before the wrath of the great ones will affect our family.'
(35) Manu Svâyambhuva after thus giving instruction to his grandson received from him his obeisances and went together with the sages to his abode.

Svâyambhuva Manu Advises Dhruva Mahârâja to Stop Fighting
Maitreya said: 'After having heard the words of the sages, touched Dhruva water and fixed he on his bow an arrow made by Nârâyana.S'rî Maitreya said: My dear Vidura, when Dhruva Mahârâja heard the encouraging words of the great sages, he performed the âcamana by touching water and then took up his arrow made by Lord Nârâyana and fixed it upon his bow. (Vedabase)
As he joined this weapon of Nârâyana to his bow, quickly the illusions created by the Yakshas were vanquished, o Vidura, just like pleasures and pains are upon the rise of knowledge.
As soon as Dhruva Mahârâja joined the nârâyanâstra arrow to his bow, the illusion created by the Yakshas was immediately vanquished, just as all material pains and pleasures are vanquished when one becomes fully cognizant of the self. (Vedabase)
With the weapon given fixed on his bow, there sprang out golden arrows with feathers like the wings of swans that, with the tumultuous sound of peacocks entering a forest, entered the enemy soldiers.
Even as Dhruva Mahârâja fixed the weapon made by Nârâyana Rishi onto his bow, arrows with golden shafts and feathers like the wings of a swan flew out from it. They entered the enemy soldiers with a great hissing sound, just as peacocks enter a forest with tumultuous crowing. (Vedabase)
From those sharp pointed arrows were the Yakshas, here and there on the battlefield, terribly agitated and rushed they towards him in anger, with uplifted weapons, like serpents with raised hoods against Garuda.
Those sharp arrows dismayed the enemy soldiers, who became almost unconscious, but various Yakshas on the battlefield, in a rage against Dhruva Mahârâja, somehow or other collected their weapons and attacked. Just as serpents agitated by Garuda rush towards Garuda with upraised hoods, all the Yaksha soldiers prepared to overcome Dhruva Mahârâja with their upraised weapons. (Vedabase)
By his arrows he cut through the arms, legs, necks and bellies of all the Yakshas coming forward in battle and sent them to the abode above the sun to which at all times the ones who send their seed upwards [the celibates] go.
When Dhruva Mahârâja saw the Yakshas coming forward, he immediately took his arrows and cut the enemies to pieces. Separating their arms, legs, heads and bellies from their bodies, he delivered the Yakshas to the planetary system which is situated above the sun globe and which is attainable only by first-class brahmacârîs, who have never discharged their semen. (Vedabase)
Seeing those Yakshas by the one of the finest chariot being killed, while they factually were without offense, approached the grandfather, the Manu, together with the great sages, from his mercy the son of Uttânapâda to instruct him.
When Svâyambhuva Manu saw that his grandson Dhruva Mahârâja was killing so many of the Yakshas who were not actually offenders, out of his great compassion he approached Dhruva with great sages to give him good instruction. (Vedabase)
Manu said: 'Enough my son, with an escalation of anger you're on the path of ignorance and sin, the way you're killing these Yakshas who never wronged you.
Lord Manu said: My dear son, please stop. It is not good to become unnecessarily angry--it is the path to hellish life. Now you are going beyond the limit by killing Yakshas who are actually not offenders. (Vedabase)
O dear, this undertaking to kill the Yakshas who didn't sin, is not befitting our family and is in truth forbidden.
My dear son, the killing of the sinless Yakshas which you have undertaken is not at all approved by authorities, and it does not befit our family, which is supposed to know the laws of religion and irreligion. (Vedabase)
Surely my best, you are aggrieved by the death of the brother you care about, but now the offense of one Yaksha has lead to the killing of the many of his associates.
My dear son, it has been proved that you are very much affectionate towards your brother and are greatly aggrieved at his being killed by the Yakshas, but just consider--for one Yaksha's offense, you have killed many others, who are innocent. (Vedabase)
This killing of living beings, is certainly never the way of those who are honest in following on the path of the Lord of the Senses; taking the body for the self one is like the animals.
One should not accept the body as the self and thus, like the animals, kill the bodies of others. This is especially forbidden by saintly persons, who follow the path of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. (Vedabase)
With meditation on the Supersoul within all living beings, you have reached the abode of Lord Hari, who is so difficult to propitiate and have you attained the supreme position of Vishnu.
It is very difficult to achieve the spiritual abode of Hari, in the Vaikunthha planets, but you are so fortunate that you are already destined to go to that abode by worshiping Him as the supreme abode of all living entities. (Vedabase)
Being such a person, by Him always in remembrance of what is His and also being held in regard by the devoted ones, how then could you, vowed to the saintly an example, undertake such an abominable thing?
Because you are a pure devotee of the Lord, the Lord is always thinking of you, and you are also recognized by all His confidential devotees. Your life is meant for exemplary behavior. I am therefore surprised--why have you undertaken such an abominable task? (Vedabase)
Being of universal tolerance, friendship and mercy towards all living beings, one is also balanced and with that is the Soul of All, the Supreme Lord very pleased.
The Lord is very satisfied with His devotee when the devotee greets other people with tolerance, mercy, friendship and equality. (Vedabase)
Pleasing the Supreme Lord is a person liberated from the modes of material nature and freed from the worries of his individual existence; he achieves the spiritual bliss of the Unlimited [brahma nirvânam].
One who actually satisfies the Supreme Personality of Godhead during one's lifetime becomes liberated from the gross and subtle material conditions. Thus being freed from all material modes of nature, he achieves unlimited spiritual bliss. (Vedabase)
From the five elements of matter man and woman evolved and of their sexual life there came about even more men and women in this world.
The creation of the material world begins with the five elements, and thus everything, including the body of a man or a woman, is created of these elements. By the sexual life of man and woman, the number of men and women in this material world is further increased. (Vedabase)
Thus, o King, does, by the illusory energy of the Supreme Self, the creation, maintenance and annihilation and the interaction of the modes take place.
Manu continued: My dear King Dhruva, it is simply by the illusory, material energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and by the interaction of the three modes of material nature that creation, maintenance and annihilation take place. (Vedabase)
Like iron moved by a magnet then, must this manifested world be considered as moved by the remote cause of the unmanifest, uncontaminated, Original Person of Wisdom.
My dear Dhruva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is uncontaminated by the material modes of nature. He is the remote cause of the creation of this material cosmic manifestation. When He gives the impetus, many other causes and effects are produced, and thus the whole universe moves, just as iron moves by the integrated force of a magnet. (Vedabase)
Divided by the force of Time, that is the Supreme Lord who, even though His potency acts upon the three modes, is the non-doer who is never the killer although He kills, takes no doubt however, this all place because of the inconceivable power of the Almighty.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, by His inconceivable supreme energy, time, causes the interaction of the three modes of material nature, and thus varieties of energy become manifest. It appears that He is acting, but He is not the actor. He is killing, but He is not the killer. Thus it is understood that only by His inconceivable power is everything happening. (Vedabase)Text 19:
He the infinite Time puts everything to an end; without a beginning He is the beginning of everything; without decreasing He causes the living to be born and the finite to be killed by death.
My dear Dhruva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is ever existing, but in the form of time, He is the killer of everything. He has no beginning, although He is the beginning of everything, nor is He ever exhaustible, although everything is exhausted in due course of time. The living entities are created through the agency of the father and killed through the agency of death, but He is perpetually free of birth and death. (Vedabase)
No one is really His ally or His definite enemy; of the Supreme in the form of Time, entering equally the living beings, are of His moving the ones of karma and the other material elements following behind, like particles of dust moved by the wind.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His feature of eternal time, is present in the material world and is neutral towards everyone. No one is His ally, and no one is His enemy. Within the jurisdiction of the time element, everyone enjoys or suffers the result of his own karma, or fruitive activities. As, when the wind blows, small particles of dust fly in the air, so, according to one's particular karma, one suffers or enjoys material life. (Vedabase)
Free from a short or long lifespan as is the case with the beings of birth, is the Almighty ever situated in His own transcendendental position and awards He the living beings subject to the laws of karma.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu, is all-powerful, and He awards the results of one's fruitive activities. Thus, although one living entity's duration of life is very small whereas that of another is very great, He is always in His transcendental position, and there is no question of lessening or increasing His duration of life. (Vedabase)
Some explain that karma [or being divided in fruitive action] as arising from one's particular nature or as brought about by others, o protector of men; some say it's due to Time, others refer to fate, while still others ascribe it to the desire of the living entity.
The differentiation among varieties of life and their suffering and enjoyment is explained by some to be the result of karma. Others say it is due to nature, others due to time, others due to fate, and still others say that it is due to desire. (Vedabase)
Dearest one, for sure therefore no one can ever know the grand design of the Original Cause, the Unmanifested of the Transcendence of Him who gives rise to the various energies.
The Absolute Truth, Transcendence, is never subject to the understanding of imperfect sensory endeavor, nor is He subject to direct experience. He is the master of varieties of energies, like the full material energy, and no one can understand His plans or actions; therefore it should be concluded that although He is the original cause of all causes, no one can know Him by mental speculation. (Vedabase)
Never, my son, are also all these who are followers of Kuvera [the divine treasurer] the killers of your brother; the cause of birth and death of a living entity, my dear, unfailing lies with God.
My dear son, those Yakshas, who are descendants of Kuvera, are not actually the killers of your brother; the birth and death of every living entity are caused by the Supreme, who is certainly the cause of all causes. (Vedabase)
He creates the universe and for sure maintains and annihilates it also; moreover no doubt He from being without ego, does not get entangled by the activities of the modes of nature.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead creates this material world, maintains it, and annihilates it in due course of time, but because He is transcendental to such activities, He is never affected by ego in such action or by the modes of material nature. (Vedabase)
This Supersoul, controller and maintainer of all beings, making use of the force of His own external energy, brings forth, devours and fosters.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supersoul of all living entities. He is the controller and maintainer of everyone; through the agency of His external energy, He creates, maintains and annihilates everyone. (Vedabase)
Unto Him, so sure the Supreme of death and immortality, my dearest, that is in all respects the ultimate goal of surrender of the world, do all the devoted ones bear offerings, without fail being controlled therein like bulls by a rope through their nose.
My dear boy Dhruva, please surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the ultimate goal of the progress of the world. Everyone, including the demigods headed by Lord Brahmâ, is working under His control, just as a bull, prompted by a rope in its nose, is controlled by its owner. (Vedabase)
Five years of age only you left your mother aggrieved at heart by the words of your stepmother and went to the forest to worship the Lord by austerities and thus you achieved the top position over the three worlds.
My dear Dhruva, at the age of only five years you were very grievously afflicted by the words of your mother's co-wife, and you very boldly gave up the protection of your mother and went to the forest to engage in the yogîc process for realization of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As a result of this y ou have already achieved the topmost position in all the three worlds. (Vedabase)
With that of Him in mind, my best, turn yourself, free from anger, to the one infallible spiritual self [the Brahman] situated in the transcendental and try to discover the uncontaminated from which all of this dividedness appears to be untrue.
My dear Dhruva, please, therefore, turn your attention to the Supreme Person, who is the infallible Brahman. Face the Supreme Personality of Godhead in your original position, and thus, by self-realization, you will find this material differentiation to be merely flickering. (Vedabase)
By at that time rendering service to the Supersoul of the Supreme Lord, who, having all potencies, is the unlimited reservoir of all pleasure, you will very soon untie the knot of illusion of 'I' and 'mine' and thus be firmly fixed.
Thus regaining your natural position and rendering service unto the Supreme Lord, who is the all-powerful reservoir of all pleasure and who lives in all living entities as the Supersoul, you will very soon forget the illusory understanding of "I" and "my". (Vedabase)
Just control your anger - it is the enemy of all goodness - and all good fortune will be yours; the constant hearing of this, my dear King, will act as a medicinal treatment on a disease.
My dear King, just consider what I have said to you, which will act as medicinal treatment upon disease. Control your anger, for anger is the foremost enemy on the path of spiritual realization. I wish all good fortune for you. Please follow my instructions. (Vedabase)
Never should a learned person who desires the soul its freedom from fear, be under the control of anger, for everyone fears the person overwhelmed by it.
A person who desires liberation from this material world should not fall under the control of anger because when bewildered by anger one becomes a source of dread for all others. (Vedabase)
You've been in offense towards the brother of S'iva, Kuvera, angrily killing the Yakshas who you thought killed your brother.
My dear Dhruva, you thought that the Yakshas killed your brother, and therefore you have killed great numbers of them. But by this action you have agitated the mind of Lord S'iva's brother Kuvera, who is the treasurer of the demigods. Please note that your actions have been very disrespectful to Kuvera and Lord S'iva. (Vedabase)
Forthwith pacify him, my son, offering him your obeisances respectfully with gentle words, before the wrath of the great ones will affect our family.
For this reason, my son, you should immediately pacify Kuvera with gentle words and prayers, and thus his wrath may not affect our family. (Vedabase)
Manu Svâyambhuva after thus giving instruction to his grandson received from him his obeisances and went together with the sages to his abode.
Thus Svâyambhuva Manu, after giving instruction to Dhruva Mahârâja, his grandson, received respectful obeisances from him. Then Lord Manu and the great sages went back to their respective homes. (Vedabase)
